Egyptian human rights activist to speak at USM

PORTLAND — Egyptian novelist, feminist and human rights activist Nawal El Saadawi will speak tomorrow evening at the University of Southern Maine about the recent revolution in her country.

The free, public lecture will take place at 7 p.m. at the Talbot Auditorium in Luther Bonney Hall.

A longtime opponent of the Mubarak regime, El Saadawi has been censored, imprisoned and threatened with death. In 2004, she ran for president of Egypt on a platform of human rights and women’s rights in the face of attacks by both fundamentalists and Mubarak supporters.

Though 80 years old, El Saadawi participated in the protests in Tahrir Square in Cairo from the beginning of the movement to oust President Mubarak and transform Egyptian society. She is now on a speaking tour of U.S. college campuses.
