The fight was part of International Pillow Fight Day, a social media-driven event that took place in more than 65 cities around the globe. In Portland, spectators held signs that said, "Hugs Not Slugs" and "Make Beds Not War."

The fighters included adults and children swinging pillows to a background of rock music as an emcee shouted encouragement.

Participants had different reactions to the fight.

"I'm bored," announced Samantha McDonough, 6, to her parents, Clay and Fey McDonough of Yarmouth.

But Kristin Cameron of Nobleboro said hitting a stranger with a pillow is good, simple fun.

"You have an instant connection with someone," she said.
