A Carrabassett Valley Academy student and son of a Sugarloaf employee died after hitting an object off the side of a black diamond trail at the ski resort Saturday.

A spokesman for the resort, Ethan Austin, said the accident occurred around noon on the Hayburner, a trail on the central part of the mountain. He said officials aren’t sure what object the teenager ran into and added that Carrabassett Valley police and members of the resort’s Ski Patrol are investigating the accident.

Austin declined to identify the 16-year-old, saying the resort has a policy of not identifying those who are injured on the mountain. Carrabassett Valley police also declined to identify the boy, saying they weren’t sure his mother had been notified.

The death comes on the heels of a serious accident Dec. 28 in which a chairlift malfunctioned, sending five chairs to the ground and injuring eight people.

Austin said the last time a skier at Sugarloaf died under similar circumstances was in 2009.

He said the teen who died Saturday was wearing a helmet. The trail was groomed Friday night, Austin said, and conditions at the mountain Saturday were described as packed powder.

A black diamond trail is considered one of the most difficult at the mountain.
