Letter to the editor: Seriously mentally ill need to get federal funds

I am the father of a seriously mentally ill son who murdered his mother, after ideologically driven federally funded lawyers “freed” him from hospitalization over the objections of my wife and myself.

I want to thank Rep. Mike Michaud for co-sponsoring HR 3717, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, which reins in the federal program responsible for our family’s tragedy.

HR 3717 also undertakes major reforms to ensure that federal mental health spending goes where it is most needed: to providing treatment to the most seriously mentally ill, rather than, as currently used, to improving the mental health of all others.

I ask Rep. Chellie Pingree to side with families of the seriously mentally ill and co-sponsor this important bill.
