High school roundup: Lake Region wins in girls’ basketball

FALMOUTH — Tiana-Jo Carter scored 17 points Thursday night to lead Lake Region to a 65-34 victory against Falmouth in a Western Maine Conference schoolgirl basketball game.

The Lakers (11-1) gradually opened a 42-29 lead before ending the game with a 23-5 surge.

Jordan Turner added 13 points and Sarah Hancock 11 for Lake Region. Dayna Vasconcelos led Falmouth (3-9) with 10 points.

THORNTON ACADEMY 44, BIDDEFORD 31: Abigail Strickland scored nine points in the third quarter as Thornton Academy (11-1) held the Tigers (2-10) to no field goals and four free throws to take a 31-20 lead at Biddeford.

Biddeford led 16-12 with 1:30 left in the first half, but the Trojans closed with a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer to take a 17-16 halftime lead.

Strickland finished with 11 points and Olivia Shaw 10 for Thornton. Carissa Gelinas scored 11 for Biddeford.

MADISON 83, LISBON 42: The Bulldogs (9-3) took a 51-20 halftime lead and went on to beat the Greyhounds (4-6) at Madison.

Erin Whalen scored 15 ponts, Aly LeBlanc and Alex Jarvais each added 12, and Kayla Bess had 11 for Madison.

Adrianna White led Lisbon with 21 points.

BONNY EAGLE 48, SCARBOROUGH 46: Sam Maxfield took Cassidy Emery’s pass into the middle and cut to the basket for the winning layup with 10 seconds left to lift the Scots (3-10) over Scarborough (5-7) at Standish.

The basket capped a 13-5 fourth-quarter run for Bonny Eagle, led by Maxfield with seven points.

Emery scored 14 for the Scots; Maxfield and Elizabeth Bushey finished with 12 apiece. Ashley Briggs had 18 and Bailey Adams 10 for the Red Storm.

OXFORD HILLS 51, MESSALONSKEE 46: Crystal West scored 14 points to lead the Vikings (8-3) over Messalonskee (8-5) at Oakland.

Ana Winslow added 13 points for Oxford Hills while Brooke Murch scored 10.

Kelsey Mayo led Messalonskee with 18 points while Sophie Holmes added 11.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

BONNY EAGLE 91, SCARBOROUGH 62: Nick Dubay sank six 3-pointers, helping the Scots (11-1) convert 18 of their first 23 3-point attempts before missing their final five during a victory against Scarborough (7-5) at Standish.

Bonny Eagle sank 11 of 13 3-pointers in the first half, opening a 53-31 lead.

Dustin Cole led Bonny Eagle with 24 points, Dubay added 18, Benjamin Malloy 16 and Nathan Alexander 13. Matt Hartl scored 21, Nate Wessel 20 and Milani Hicks 11 for Scarborough.

MAINE CENTRAL INSTITUTE 53, ERSKINE ACADEMY 46: Mitchell Hallee and Gunner Lovely scored 11 points apiece to lead the Huskies (3-8) over Erskine Academy at South China.

Tyler Bailey and Jared Gartley led Erskine with 12 points apiece while teammate Trevor Browne scored 10.

BOYS’ HOCKEY

SOUTH PORTLAND 6, WESTBROOK 3: Andrew Whipple scored the second of his three goals 4:10 into the second period to make it 2-2, then set up Chris Mitchell 20 seconds later to help South Portland (4-3) push away from the Blue Blazes (2-8) at Portland.

Mitchell finished with two goals and an assist.

BRUNSWICK 2, MT. ARARAT/LISBON 1: Matt Brooks took Jacob Parent’s pass from the corner and lifted a backhander over the goalie’s blocker six minutes into the third period, giving the Dragons (6-3-1) a 2-1 lead against Mt. Ararat/Lisbon (5-6) at Brunswick.

Ryan Maciejewski gave Brunswick a 1-0 lead in the first period, only to have Tyler Halls tie the game in the second for Mt. Ararat/Lisbon.

Blake Alexander needed to make eight saves for the victory. Kyle Welsh stopped 35 shots for the Eagles.

CAPE ELIZABETH 3, PORTLAND/DEERING 2: Eli Breed took Ben Ekedahl’s pass from the corner and slipped it into the net, giving the Capers (2-6-1) a 3-2 lead against Portland/Deering (3-5-1) with 1:39 to play at Portland.

Ekedahl had made it 2-2 early in the third period. Cole Caswell also scored for South Portland. Chris Eye and Zach Luce answered for Portland/Deering.

CHEVERUS 7, YARMOUTH 3: James Kane and Luke Trickey scored twice each for the Stags (6-2-1) against Yarmouth (4-3-1) at Portland. Nic Noyes added a goal and two assists for Cheverus.
