Major League Notebook: Red Sox get reliever from Brewers

Burke Badenhop was 2-3 with a 3.47 ERA in 63 relief appearances for Milwaukee this season.

The Associated Press

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox picked up right-handed reliever Burke Badenhop from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor league left-hander Luis Ortega on Friday.

Badenhop, 30, had a 3.47 ERA in 63 relief appearances for Milwaukee in 2013 and finished the season with a 2.05 ERA over his last 21 games. He ranked seventh among qualifying NL relievers in fewest walks per nine innings pitched (1.7).

A 19th-round selection of the Detroit Tigers in the 2005 draft, Badenhop has played parts of six seasons in the major leagues, posting an 18-20 record with a 3.98 ERA in 280 games with the Marlins, Rays and Brewers.

Ortega, 20, spent last season in the Gulf Coast League, where he went 3-3 with a 2.45 ERA in 12 games (one start).

METS: New York agreed with outfielder Chris Young on a $7.25 million, one-year contract subject to a physical.

Young, 30, hit .200 with 12 homers and 40 RBI last season for Oakland, which acquired him from Arizona as part of a three-team trade after 2012.

His best year was 2010, when he batted .257 for the Diamondbacks with 27 homers and 91 RBI.

ANGELS-CARDINALS: The teams exchanged players with something to prove.

Peter Bourjos, a defensive whiz whose offensive potential has been muffled by injuries, went to the Cardinals for David Freese, a former World Series MVP who endured a rough season in 2013.

WHITE SOX: A federal judge sentenced a former scout, the Dominican-born Victor Mateo, to eight months in prison in a kickback scheme that targeted players from Latin America.
