Ex-college coach taking over Deering High football
Scott Parsons has been appointed Deering High football coach.
Parsons, who graduated from Kennebunk High, replaces Jon Gallant, who was head coach for two seasons after several years as an assistant coach with the program.
Parsons graduated from Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. He recently returned to Maine after having coached in college at Fordham University in New York City, Becker College in Worcester, Mass., and St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y.
Deering had a 4-6 record last year. The Rams lost to Cheverus in the Western Maine Class A playoff quarterfinals and beat Portland in the annual Thanksgiving Day game.
SPRINT CUP: Denny Hamlin has targeted the April 27 race at his home track in Richmond for his potential return from a back injury.
PATRIOTS: New England has signed ex-Oakland defensive lineman Tommy Kelly, a starter for five seasons.
BERWICK ACADEMY: Melanie Mait scored six goals to lead the girl Bulldogs in a 20-5 victory over the Bancroft School at Worcester, Mass. Tatiana Bradley added three goals for Berwick (3-0) and Izzy Reis had two goals and two assists.
Berwick held Bancroft (0-1) to just one goal in the second half.
• The Holderness School (1-1) scored six goals in the third quarter on its way to a 15-5 victory over the Berwick Academy boys (0-3), at South Berwick.
Senior Will Reis and senior Sam Hereford scored two goals each for the Bulldogs. Berwick opens it league play on Friday, April12 with a game at the Pingree School in Hamilton, Mass.
Taylor Lyman hit a grand slam and a solo homer and added a pair of doubles to lead Berwick Academy (2-0) to an 11-7 win over Hebron at South Berwick. Lyman also pitched the final two innings, striking out five of six batters.
