ORONO, Maine – Xavier Pollard scored 15 points and had 12 assists, both career highs, to lead Maine to its first victory this season, 72-66 over Siena in a men’s basketball game Sunday.

The sophomore guard assisted on four straight baskets by the Black Bears (1-4), as they turned a 40-39 deficit into a 49-40 lead with 13:37 remaining.

Three of those baskets were by Justin Edwards, who led Maine’s scorers with 19 points. Alasdair Fraser added 17 points and also had nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

UM-PRESQUE ISLE 72, SMCC 67: Aaron Hutchins made seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 30 points as the Owls (2-1) held off the Seawolves (9-2) at Presque Isle.

Jose Nouchanthavong finished with 18 points and five rebounds to lead the Seawolves and Mike Harmon added 10 points, seven rebounds and six steals.

RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 45, BATES 43: Ed Bogdanovich had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Bates, but the Anchormen (4-0) edged the Bobcats (2-2) at Lewiston.

MEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 5, SUFFOLK 2: Ollie Koo scored three goals and assisted on another as the Polar Bears (4-0-1) beat the Rams (3-4-1) at Waterville.

Connor Quinn and Timothy McGarry each added a goal for Bowdoin.

SALVE REGINA 4, COLBY 3: Nick Lanza scored a pair of goals and Tommy Kader added a pair of assists for the Mules (1-4), as they were edged by the Seahawks (3-6) at Waterville.

Mike DeBello also scored a goal for the Mules.

UMASS-BOSTON 5, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3: Shayne Toohey, Zeth Zielinski and Ryan Quinn each scored a goal for the Nor’easters (2-6) as they fell to the Beacons (5-2-1) at Hooksett, N.H.

Adam Laite assisted on all three goals for the Nor’easters and Sam Vikich added two assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

USM 67, ST. JOSEPH’S 52: Nicole Garland, Haley Jordan, Erin McNamara and Rebecca Knight scored 12 points apiece to lead a balanced offensive attack for the Huskies (4-0), as they downed the Monks (2-1) at Gorham.

Danyelle Shufelt and Sarah Assante scored 10 points apiece to pace the Monks, who trailed 36-23 at halftime.

SMCC 71, UM-PRESQUE ISLE 69: Rogetta Donalson made a jumper to put the Seawolves (7-1) ahead by one with 45 seconds left in double overtime, and they held on to edge the Owls (0-3) at Presque Isle.

Emily Bard finished with 17 points for the Seawolves and Maria Veino added 14 points and six rebounds.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

COLBY 4, UMASS-BOSTON 3: Megan Fortier scored on an assist from Kathryn Shei with 16 seconds left in overtime to lift the Mules (2-2) to a win at Boston.

Annie Papadellis scored a pair of goals for the Mules and Fortier and Samantha Slotnick added one goal and one assist apiece.
