College Roundup: Colby scrapes by Hamilton

WATERVILLE - Chris Hudnut had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and knocked down a pair of late free-throws to give Colby its final lead in a 69-65 win over Hamilton in men's basketball Sunday.

Sam Wilson, Patrick Stewart and Danny Chase each scored 10 points for the Mules (4-7, 1-0 NESCAC), who trailed 33-29 at halftime but opened the second with a 21-8 run.

The Continentals (7-7, 0-2) fought back to tie it at 65-65 with 2:17 to play, but Hudnut made two from the line with 1:57 left. Hamilton missed two 3-point attempts down the stretch.

(2) MICHIGAN 95, IOWA 67: Trey Burke had 19 points and a career-high 12 assists and Glenn Robinson III added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolverines (15-0, 2-0 Big Ten) against the Hawkeyes (11-4, 0-2) at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Michigan had only 17 points with 7:00 left in the first half before overwhelming Iowa with a flurry of dunks, 3-pointers and other highlights. The Wolverines shot 58 percent from the field and 10 of 22 from 3-point range.

(6) KANSAS 69, TEMPLE 62: Kevin Young had 16 points, hitting four critical free throws down the stretch, and the Jayhawks (12-1) beat the Owls (10-3) at Lawrence, Kan., to earn their 11th straight win.

Travis Releford added 14 points, including a 3-pointer from the wing with 34.9 seconds left to give Kansas a 65-58 lead.

(7) SYRACUSE 55, SOUTH FLORIDA 44: Brandon Triche had 20 points and James Southerland scored 12 of his 17 in the second half to help the Orange (14-1, 2-0 Big East) beat the Bulls (9-4, 0-1) at Tampa, Fla.

C.J. Fair added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Orange.

Southerland's long 3-pointer put Syracuse up 50-42 and Triche followed with a driving layup and a pair of free throws to push the lead to double-digits.

(9) MINNESOTA 69, NORTHWESTERN 51: Austin Hollins hit five 3-pointers during a three-minute stretch in the second half, finishing with 19 points to spark the Gophers (14-1, 2-0 Big Ten) against the Wildcats (9-6, 0-2) at Minneapolis.

Hollins scored 17 during the 26-7 run that gave the Minnesota a 45-25 lead. The Gophers have won 10 in a row.

(13) FLORIDA 79, YALE 58: Kenny Boynton matched his career high with 28 points on 8-for-10 shooting from 3-point range and the Gators (10-2) used a 26-3 run spanning the halves to beat the Bulldogs (5-11) at New Haven, Conn.

Will Yeguette had 14 points and Mike Rosario added 13 for Florida.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

COLBY 44, HAMILTON 41: Diana Manduca had 12 points and six rebounds as the Mules (6-6, 1-0 NESCAC) staved off a late rally by the Continentals (5-6, 0-2) at Waterville.

Carylanne Wolfington had 11 points and Jacky McLaughlin added 10 points for Colby, which led 33-17 with 7:43 to play.

Hamilton cut the Mules lead to 39-34 with 1:09 remaining, but Colby went 5-for-6 at the line to finish.

(2) BAYLOR 83, (13) OKLAHOMA ST. 49: Brooklyn Pope scored 18 points and Brittney Griner added 14 points and 10 rebounds to help the Lady Bears (12-1, 2-0 Big 12) beat the Cowgirls (11-2, 0-2) and extend their home-winning streak to 47.

Baylor could move back into the No. 1 spot in the poll on Monday after No. 5 Notre Dame beat top-ranked UConn 73-72 on Saturday.

(3) DUKE 90, BOSTON COLLEGE 53: Chelsea Gray had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Blue Devils (13-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who opened a 35-point lead and coasted past the Eagles (6-7, 0-2) at Boston to remain the only unbeaten team in Division I.

Kristen Doherty scored 17 points and added six rebounds for the Eagles.

(4) STANFORD 70, UTAH 56: Chiney Ogwumike scored 20 points, Sara James added a career-high 18 and Stanford (13-1, 2-0 Pac-12) defeated Utah (9-4, 0-2) at Salt Lake City.

(6) KENTUCKY 87, ALABAMA 70: DeNesha Stallworth had 19 points and 10 rebounds to help Kentucky (14-1, 2-0 SEC) win at Alabama (10-5, 0-2).

(12) TENNESSEE 79, (10) GEORGIA 66: Bashaara Graves scored a career-high 23 points and host Tennessee (11-3, 2-0) rallied from a 42-40 halftime deficit to beat Georgia (13-2, 1-1).

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

BROWN 6, MAINE 5: Lauren Vella had two goals and an assist as the Bears (3-9-1) held off the Black Bears (3-15-1) at Providence, R.I.

Brittany Dougherty, who had two goals and an assist for Maine, had a last-second chance, but the puck failed to completely cross the goal line before the buzzer sounded.

The Black Bears trailed 6-3 with less than four minutes to play. Dougherty scored at 16:18 and Jennifer More at 18:23.
