As many as 200 cars are expected to run for the final time this season Saturday in auto racing events at Oxford Plains Speedway and Wiscasset Raceway.
As of Thursday afternoon, nearly 140 cars had signed up to race Saturday in a variety of divisions at the one-third mile, high-banked track at Wiscasset, which is for sale and has been closed all season. Pro All Star Series President Tom Mayberry said he expects more than 40 Super Late Model drivers will try to qualify Saturday in the PASS North tour’s season finale at Oxford Plains Speedway.
“Thirty-eight cars have signed up or pre-ordered tires, so we should have about 40 cars in the Super Late Models,” Mayberry said.
A group of local businessmen has organized the racing event at the dormant Wiscasset track.
“It’s going to be a long day,” said Tony True, a member of the volunteer group. “We’re trying to fit a whole season into one day, and I didn’t want to refuse anybody who wanted to come.”
The Wiscasset event got a lift when George Fernald, general manager at Unity Raceway, decided to reschedule the postponed Fernald Frenzy for Oct. 22.
“They’re trying to put a race together at Wiscasset, and I’m supporting them when I can,” Fernald said. “I don’t want to see any Maine race track close.”
The gates will open at 7 a.m. Saturday at Wiscasset. Practice starts at 9 a.m. and racing will start at 11 a.m.
All three PASS North racing series will wrap up their campaigns Saturday at Oxford Plains Speedway.
Defending SLM champion Johnny Clark of Hallowell appears on the verge of capturing his sixth championship. He holds a 122-point lead over Lonnie Somerville of Saint John, New Brunswick.
The points races are much closer in the regional racing circuit’s other two divisions.
In Mods, Andy Shaw of North Conway, N.H., holds a 30-point lead over Alan Wilson of Hebron.
In Sportsmen, Carey Martin of Denmark holds a five-point lead over Donny Morse of Windham, with Shane Tatro of Holden trailing the leader by 12 points.
A Wildcat feature and the North East Mini Stock Tour also are on the race card at OPS, where racing will start at 1 p.m. Saturday.
If rain washes out Saturday’s events, races will be held Sunday at both sites.
