John Winkin, who won more than 1,000 games in 50-plus years of coaching at Colby, the University of Maine and Husson, was one of the two coaches and five players selected to the 2013 class of the College Baseball Hall of Fame that was announced Thursday.

Winkin, Coach Don Schaly of Marietta College in Ohio, Sal Bando (Arizona State), Tom Borland (Oklahoma State), Ralph Garr (Grambling), Tino Martinez (University of Tampa) and Roy Smalley (Southern Cal) comprise this year’s class.

Winkin began his career in 1954 at Colby and was named national coach of the year in 1965.

He finished his stay at Colby in 1974 with a 301-202-5 record.

Winkin began his 22-year tenure at Maine in 1975, the same year he was named New England Division I coach of the year. He led the Black Bears to 11 NCAA tournament appearances and two third-place finishes in six College World Series, leaving in 1996 with a 642-430-3 record.

He was also Northeast Region Division I coach of the year in 1976, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1991.

Winkin came out of retirement to coach at Husson in Bangor and recorded his 1,000th career coaching victory on March 12, 2006 at age 84.

He suffered a stroke in 2008 and stepped down at the end of the season after leading the Eagles to a 100-74-8 record.

The induction ceremony will be held during the college baseball Night of Champions celebration June 28-29 in Lubbock, Texas.

BASEBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE 15, HUSSON 8: Tucker White and Chris Bernard drove home five runs each as Southern Maine (18-3) downed the Eagles (12-11) at Bangor.

White’s RBI double gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. He added a three-run homer in the fourth for a 5-1 lead, and doubled home a run during an eight-run seventh before scoring on Bernard’s grand slam.

SOFTBALL

MAINE 11, BOSTON COLLEGE 5: Jean Stevens homered twice and drove in six runs to lead the Black Bears (6-29) past the Eagles (10-23) at Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Stevens hit a two-run homer in the first inning, then made it 4-0 with another two-run shot in the third. She added a two-run single in the fourth that made it 8-1.

Makaila Kowalsky chipped in two doubles and drove in two runs for the Black Bears.

UNE SPLITS WITH RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE: Allie Frazier, Amanda Vallante and Meghan Bolano hit RBI singles in the seventh inning to rally the Nor’easters (13-12-1) to a 4-2 victory against the Anchormen (14-12) in the second game of a doubleheader at Providence, R.I.

Abby Lambert pitched a complete game for UNE.

Rhode Island College captured the first game 10-6, led by a three-hit, five-RBI performance from Justina Thoma. Amanda Vaudreuil and Bolano drove in two runs apiece for the Nor’easters.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

MAINE: Doug Leichner, the associate head coach, was named the head coach of the Great Britain under-20 men’s team that will compete in the European championships July 11-21 in Romania.

Leichner has been with the Black Bears for nine seasons.
