Major League Notebook: Jays put Reyes on DL with a sprained ankle

The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Shortstop Jose Reyes of the Toronto Blue Jays likely will be sidelined until the All-Star break because of a severely sprained left ankle.

Ten games into his Toronto career, Reyes was injured during an awkward slide into second base during Friday night's 8-4 victory against the Kansas City Royals.

"It is frustrating. I love baseball so much," Reyes said. "I love to be with my teammates on the field and helping my ballclub. Now I know I'm not going to be there for a little while. It's kind of disappointing for me. I've been through some injuries in my career. I don't like that. Injuries are part of the game and I have to deal with it."

Reyes, a four-time All-Star, was carted off the field and placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

REDS: Second baseman Brandon Phillips missed the game against Pittsburgh because of what Manager Dusty Baker termed a "family matter."

Baker said Phillips might also miss Sunday's game, the finale of the three-game series.

Right-hander Johnny Cueto left with strained right triceps in the fifth inning against Pittsburgh.

PIRATES: Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez said he will miss his scheduled start Sunday against the Reds because of a strained left hamstring.

"I can throw on it, I can walk on it and I can run on it but the one thing I can't do yet is push off of it when I try to pitch," Rodriguez said. "It's getting a lot better and I don't think I'll miss any more starts."

ATHLETICS: Left fielder Yoenis Cespedes was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his left hand after he landed awkwardly in a tumbling slide Friday night.

INDIANS: Second baseman Jason Kipnis was out of the lineup for the game against Chicago with a sore left elbow.

TWINS: Minnesota optioned starting pitcher Liam Hendriks to Triple-A Rochester to make room for pitcher Scott Diamond.

CUBS: Chicago placed closer Kyuji Fujikawa on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm and called up reliever Rafael Dolis from Triple-A Iowa.

DIAMONDBACKS: Arizona placed outfielder Jason Kubel on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quadriceps and activated outfielder Cody Ross.

ANGELS: Los Angeles placed right-handed reliever Kevin Jepsen and shortstop Erick Aybar on the 15-day disabled list.
