ORONO – Gerald McLemore scored 21 points Wednesday night and Maine pulled away from Eastern Illinois in the final two minutes for a 64-60 victory.

Trailing 58-56 with 1:56 to play, the Black Bears went on a 5-0 run, with Justin Edwards hitting the go-ahead basket with 55 seconds remaining. Maine made 4 of 6 free throws the rest of the way to secure the win and split the season series.

Alasdair Fraser had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Edwards added 14 points for the Black Bears (5-4). Maine shot only 52 percent from the foul line (13 of 25) but made five more than Eastern Illinois attempted.

Eastern Illinois led 29-23 at halftime and by nine in the second half before Maine rallied.

Alfonzo McKinnie scored 20 points and Jeremy Granger had 15 for the Panthers (6-5), who lost their third straight game.

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 78, MAINE 63: Rachelle Coward scored 30 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead the Buccaneers (7-4) over the Black Bears (3-9) in the Gator Holiday Classic at Gainesville, Fla.

Shareka Maner led Maine with 12 points. Maner and Rebecca Knight each grabbed eight rebounds.

Ashleigh Roberts had 10 points and Brittany Williams followed with eight.

Rebecca Knight also had eight rebounds for Maine.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Robert Griffin III won The Associated Press college football player of the year, adding another award to his impressive postseason haul.

Griffin, the Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor, won in a landslide over Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. Griffin received 43 votes from the AP poll panel. Luck was second with seven. LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu received five votes and Alabama running back Trent Richardson got one.

POINSETTIA BOWL: Casey Pachall highlighted a record-setting game with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Skye Dawson with 4:26 left to lift No. 16 TCU (11-2) to a 31-24 victory against Louisiana Tech (8-5) at San Diego.

It was the eighth straight victory for Mountain West Conference champion TCU, which moves to the Big 12 next season.
