Falmouth volleyball improves to 2-0 with win over Thornton Academy

Falmouth swept visiting Thornton Academy 3-0 on Thursday in volleyball, 25-7, 25-18 and 25-9.

For the Yachtsmen (2-0), Megan Tammaro had nine service points, three aces, four kills and 10 digs. Leigh Bernardy finished with 16 service points, nine aces, three kills and two blocks, while Sophie Emple had 10 service points, two assists and four kills.

• Mary Cleary had 17 kills and six digs as Scarborough downed visiting Greely 3-1, with scores of 29-31, 25-11, 25-14, 26-24. Abby Mills added 11 kills and three digs, while Kayla Savage finished with eight kills and seven digs.

Lauren Piper and Hallie O’Donnell also combined for 43 assists.

GOLF

EUROPEAN TOUR: Nearly two decades after winning the KLM Open for the first time, Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain shot a 6-under 64 for the first-round lead at Zandvoort, Netherlands.

Robert Allenby of Australia and Gary Orr of Scotland are among a group of six players at 65 at the Kennemer Golf and Country Club on the North Sea coast.

PGA: Darren Clarke will return to the PGA Tour for the first time in seven years, taking advantage of the five-year exemption he earned by winning the 2011 British Open. Clarke, 45, forfeited his PGA membership after his first wife Heather died of cancer in 2006, choosing to focus on the European Tour to be near his two sons.

CYCLING

OLYMPICS: Lance Armstrong, stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, has returned his Olympic bronze medal.

The U.S. Olympic Committee confirmed in a statement that it had received the medal, about eight months after Armstrong was officially stripped of his third-place finish in a time trial at the 2000 Summer Games.

SAILING

AMERICA’S CUP: Defending America’s Cup champion Oracle Team USA simply can’t catch Emirates Team New Zealand. The Kiwis beat Oracle Team USA twice more, moving closer to taking the America’s Cup Down Under for the second time in 18 years.

Team New Zealand needs three more victories to claim the oldest trophy in international sports.

SOCCER

FIFA: World and European champion Spain remained first in the FIFA rankings for the 25th consecutive month, while Argentina rose two places to second. Germany dropped to third, Italy was fourth and Colombia fifth.

The U.S. rose six places to 13th.

MEXICO: Victor Manuel Vucetich was hired as coach of the national team as it tries to recover from a pair of losses in World Cup qualifying and avoid missing the tournament for the first time in 25 years.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Shekinna Stricklen scored 26 points, Tina Thompson added 20 and the Seattle Storm beat the Tulsa Shock 76-67 at Tulsa to snap a three-game losing streak.
