WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Chantell Alford scored 18 points to lead the top-seeded Boston University women’s basketball team to a 52-43 win over the University of Maine on Friday in an America East quarterfinal.

Courtney Anderson led the eighth-seeded Black Bears (8-23) with a career-high 13 points, including six points as Maine opened the second half with an 11-4 run to tie it at 33.

But Alford made six straight free throws to get the lead back for the Terriers.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

(12) MURRAY STATE 78, TENNESSEE TECH 58: Donte Poole scored 25 points, and the Racers (29-1) advanced to the Ohio Valley Conference final at Nashville, Tenn.

(15) WICHITA STATE 72, INDIANA STATE 48: Toure Murry and Joe Ragland scored 14 points each and Garrett Stutz had 12 rebounds to lead the Shockers (27-4) into the Missouri Valley Conference semifinals at St. Louis.

(20) NOTRE DAME 75, PROVIDENCE 69: Jack Cooley scored a career-high 27 points and had 17 rebounds as the Fighting Irish (21-10, 13-5 Big East) locked up the No. 3 seed for the Big East tournament with a victory over the Friars (15-16, 4-14) at South Bend, Ind.

(25) CREIGHTON 68, DRAKE 61: Greg McDermott scored 26 points and Antoine Young added 16 points to lift the Blue Jays (26-5) over the Bulldogs in the Missouri Valley Conference semifinals.

MEN’S HOCKEY

NORWICH 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: Troy Thibodeau and Ryan Seward scored for USM, but the sixth-seeded Huskies (10-11-6) were eliminated by the top-seeded Cadets (22-2-2) in an ECAC semifinal at Northfield, Vt.

BASEBALL

FLORIDA STATE 6, MAINE 0: The Black Bears (3-3) were held to four hits in a loss to the Seminoles (7-1) at Tallahassee, Fla.

HALL OF FAME: Former major league All-Stars Lou Brock and Nomar Garciaparra are among seven players and coaches elected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

SOFTBALL

MAINE LOSES TWICE: Hilary Kane had five hits, including her first home run of the season in the second game, but the Black Bears (4-9) suffered a pair of losses against South Carolina and UC Riverside at Riverside, Calif.

South Carolina (14-4) broke open the first game with a seven-run second inning on the way to a 13-4 win.

Kane homered in the fourth inning of the second game, which went to extra innings. The Black Bears took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth on RBI singles by EmJ Fogel and Kylie Sparks but Riverside (6-10) scored three runs in the bottom half.
