Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that damaged a kitchen in a Brown Street home over the weekend.

Fire Chief Gary Littlefield said the cause appeared to be accidental. The Fire Department received the call about the fire at 296 Brown St. at approximately 12:40 p.m. on Saturday. Engines arrived at the house about five minutes after the call and quickly had the fire under control.

“The first crews (at the scene) made an excellent attack, and the fire was under control at 12:50 p.m.,” Littlefield said.

The kitchen, which was on the second floor of the house, was extensively damaged, Littlefield said. He added that the rest of the second floor received some heat and smoke damage, and there was minor water damage to the first floor of the house.

The two residents of the house were at home at the time of the fire. Littlefield said both got out of the house safely, and there were no injuries to report.

Fire Inspector Lt. Chuck Jarrett said the cause of the fire is still undetermined. He said Monday afternoon that it appeared the fire damage was contained to the kitchen area. He said he would be speaking to the occupants of the house, who are currently staying with family, before making a determination as to the cause of the fire.

The Westbrook Fire Department was assisted at the scene by a ladder truck from the Portland Fire Department. The Scarborough, Windham and Falmouth fire departments provided station coverage for Westbrook while crews were at the scene.
