Maine Audubon’s Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center needs adult volunteers Monday through Friday to lead nature walks and canoe tours for all ages.

No experience is needed to lead nature explorations, said center director Linda Woodard, just a love of nature and a desire to share it with others. “In this exciting, hands-on program, volunteers learn how to help people of all ages explore the ecology and wildlife of Maine’s largest salt marsh.”

Training in marsh ecology and group management begins April 25 with a new guide orientation and continues April 26 with a plant-ID walk, April 28 with a sample walk and May 2 with a bird-ID walk. All sessions are 9:30 a.m. to noon at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center on Route 9 in Scarborough. Special arrangements can be made for those who can’t make training. In-depth internships also are available.

From 9 a.m. to noon on April 23-in celebration of Earth Day-volunteers of all ages are also needed to help ready the facility for group and public programming. The center opens to the public May 28.

For more information or to sign up for volunteer training or the clean up, contact Linda Woodard at (207) 781-2330, ext. 213, or lwoodard@maineaudubon.org.

Owned and managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the 3,100 acre estuary known as Scarborough Marsh is the largest salt marsh in the state, comprising tidal marsh, salt creeks, freshwater marsh and uplands. The marsh is particularly important for wildlife as a resting, breeding and feeding ground. Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center provides a variety of guided and self-guided walks and canoe tours as well as exhibits, a nature trail, canoe rentals and a Maine Audubon Nature Store. An aquarium, mounted birds and mammals, and interactive exhibits are also featured at the center. All guided programs are led by trained naturalists.

MAINE AUDUBON works to conserve Maine’s wildlife and wildlife habitat by engaging people of all ages in education, conservation and action.
