Catherine Achorn of Casco, a senior at Lake Region High School, has been selected to receive the 2005 Principal’s Award, Principal Roger Lowell announced.

The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

According to Lowell, Catherine is an extraordinarily studious individual who currently stands first in her class. She was the recipient of last year’s Bausch & Lomb Science Award, the AP Biology Award and Smith’s Book Award. She is one of the founding members of the Rotary Interact Club, a community service organization in the area.

Catherine has also found her way into Lake Region’s history books by becoming the first student to earn a “5” on her Advanced Placement Biology exam. She traveled to Costa Rica over February vacation to participate in a community service project, to study the ecology of the country and to have fun.

She has been active as a member of the Math Team and in the Concert Choir. Catherine plans to major in Biology. She is still deciding on a specific career path, but is sure it will be in the science field. Catherine has already been accepted to the University of Maine and Northeastern University, Bates College, Bowdoin College, Colby College and Boston University. She will make her college decision this spring.
