The Portland Water District (PWD) will begin replacing several sections of Greater Portland’s water mains in mid-April.
PWD maintains 950 miles of water pipe and each year invests about $2.5 million to replace three to four miles of water main. Project priority is determined by a set of criteria: Water quality issues, previous leaks, age and type of main, and planned road reconstruction projects. When water mains are replaced, future demands are reviewed and pipe is resized accordingly. The water main renewal program improves water quality, water flow, water pressure and service to customers.

In 2002, the Portland Water District undertook a comprehensive review of the water system. The study indicated a significant increase in the need for future renewals based on the size and life of water mains. In order to lessen the rate impact of future investments in the distribution system, the Portland Water District has increased the amount of main renewed each year.
