The Gorham Town Council will discuss the $24.9 million proposed schools budget and the fire and rescue budget in a workshop at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in the high school auditorium.

The Town Council had not seen the school budget on Tuesday.

There will be a public hearing and Town Council discussion of Town Manager David Cole’s proposed $10.2 million municipal budget on Tuesday, May 10. The school budget as proposed represents a 4.9 percent hike over the present budget, and Cole’s budget represents a 1.1 percent increase on the town side.

The School Department budget would return $1 million of the $2.3 million more it expects to receive in state funding over the present budget to the town for tax relief. But Gorham would lose an estimated $450,216 in tax revenue for the upcoming fiscal year because of an unfunded increase of the Homestead exemption mandated by the state.

“I’m not happy about it,” said Burleigh Loveitt, council chairman, on Tuesday about the loss in Homestead revenue.
