Boy Scouts from the Lakes Region are finalizing plans to attend the 2005 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia from July 25 to August 3, 2005. Over 40,000 Scouts and leaders from all over the USA are expected at the event.

The Pine Tree Council is sending four troops from Southern Maine. Each troop contains 36 Scouts and four adult leaders. Troop 107 is the official troop designation for local Scouts from Fryeburg to Falmouth who have signed on for the Jamboree.

The Scouts have been organizing the Jamboree trip for almost two years. The Scouts and their families pay most of the cost for the excursion.

Fort A.P. Hill is located in the green countryside of Caroline County, Virginia, near the town of Fredericksburg, and not far from historic Washington, D.C. The 76,000-acre U.S. Army facility has been the permanent site of the National Scout Jamboree since 1981. Over 17,000 tents will be erected on July 25, as the Scouts converge on a 3,000-acre camp and activity area.

During the Jamboree the Scouts will be picking activities that include archery, biking, scuba diving, kayaking, rafting, canoeing, rappelling, trap shooting, American Indian studies and a host of other fun-packed choices.

Local Scouts in Troop 107 include: Matthew Butler, Anthony Charron, Mitchell Corey, Samuel Corey, David LeClaire, Matthew Wilson and Timothy Wilson from Windham, and Steven Lentine, Kyle Robbins, Kyle Woodbury and Chad Zawistowski from Raymond, and Spencer Ward from Casco. Bob Zawistowski of Raymond will be one of the adult leaders taking the boys to the Jamboree.

Current plans call for the Scouts to leave from Camp Hinds, in Raymond on July 20, and travel by bus to Washington, D.C. The boys will spend two days touring the nation’s capital, and visiting the Smithsonian, the US Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery and other locations. At night the Scouts will probably sleep in a school gymnasium or military base.

The return by bus will commence on August 3 and the buses are expected to make it back to Camp Hinds on the same evening.
