This picture was taken prior to 1886. Rogers & Varney, and later Rogers & Gould, had been a business located at the corner of Route 302 and Route 35 in Windham, in the area where Dunkin’ Donuts is located today. This corner lot contained two acres and the old store was probably built in the early 1800s. Rogers & Gould was a dry goods/grocery, and upstairs coats and hats were made. In 1886, Leonard S. Freeman purchased this place and removed the shop. Freeman built a new 2-1/2 story building, which he attached to another building located at the corner, and called it the Lake House.
