For the last four years, the Youth Alternatives Cumberland County Child Abuse & Neglect Council (the Council) has taken advantage of April, Child Abuse Prevention Month, to recognize individuals in the Greater Portland community who have been creative, diligent, and sometimes very quiet advocates for children and families.

At a luncheon held on Wednesday, April 27, the Council honored local efforts in the fight against child abuse and neglect. The Prevention Award winners, who shine a light on the myriad ways in which community members contribute to the safety and well-being of children and families, are chosen from nominations submitted by the community. Among those honored this year was Windham Center Stage Theater (WCST) for its ongoing attempts to include children.

Stacy Karp Mosher of Youth Alternatives referred to WSCT as a place that “has been gathering kids and families together to perform for over 30 years. WCST is the only Community Theater that guarantees a part for every child who auditions. The theater brings kids and parents together by establishing roles for the parents, including painting, working back stage and volunteering in make-up, costumes, lights or sound. Each weekend in late winter, WCST, without pretense, demonstrates what a community is all about. Board President Mary Wassick and her team have given countless hours to put on wonderful productions of love, laughter, pride and entertainment.”
