On May 17, the MSAD#6 Reading Recovery and Reading Support Program staff hosted an educational evening focusing on literacy. Approximately 250 students, staff, and family members gathered in the Bonny Eagle High School cafeteria to celebrate learning and literacy. The goals of the event were for the students to show their parents some of what they have learned in the reading program and for the children and parents to spend time together learning with fun reading activities.
The children and parents played word games that could be played at home. The children also read to their family members, showing their fluency with a familiar book. Dr. Karen Burke, Assistant Superintendent, led the families through the various activities while the reading program staff interacted with students and parents. Dr. Burke read aloud one of her favorite stories, Wild About Books, by Judy Sierra. At the conclusion of the evening, each reading student received a gift bag containing a new book, journal, pencil and bookmark, and families were treated to cupcakes and juice in recognition of the students’ efforts.
