Thirteen southern Maine-area college students have been selected for summer internships in state government, working in a variety of capacities in departments ranging from transportation and environmental to administrative and financial services.

A list of students and internships follows:

Eleanor Brogan of Portland, a law student at the University of Maine Law School, law clerk and securities investigator, Maine Office of Securities;

Shannon Estey of Westbrook, an English and communications major at George Washington University, management analyst, Secretary of State Bureau of Motor Vehicles;

Andrew Jessen of Portland, a law student at the University of Maine Law School, management analyst intern, Department of Administrative and Financial Services;

Peter Lacy of South Portland, an economics major at University of Southern Maine, research assistant, Department of Labor;

Aaron McCullough of Springvale, an economics and government major at Bowdoin, labor market studies intern, Department of Labor’s Labor Market Information Services.

Jan Messerschmidt of Cape Elizabeth, a philosophy and politics major at New York University, consumer assistance intern, Public Utilities Commission’s Consumer Assistance Division;

Elizabeth Nelson of Portland, an American studies major at Georgetown University, administrative assistant, Board of Medicine;

J. Stephen Peary of South Portland, a business administration major at the University of Maine in Orono, management analyst, Bureau of Motor Vehicles;

Erica Rafford of Yarmouth, a public policy and management major at USM, transportation planner and marketer, Department of Transportation, Office of Passenger Transportation;

Rebecca Schaffner of Portland, a community planning and development major at USM, coastal program research assistant, Office of Public Advocate;

Benjamin Smith of North Yarmouth, a community planning and development major at the University of Southern Maine, “Gateway 1” coordinator, Maine Department of Transportation’s environmental office;

Matthew Thomson of Kennebunk, a history and economics major at Bowdoin College, archival intern in the Maine state archives, Secretary of State’s office;

And Lindsay Wilber of Yarmouth, a communications major at Wake Forest University, conservation law enforcement administrative assistant, Maine Warden Service, Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
