A man was seriously injured after he fell 15 feet off a wall onto some rocks by the banks of the Presumpscot River Sunday afternoon.

Police and Fire officials would not confirm the man’s name citing federal privacy laws. The police report indicated he was alone at the time of the fall, and no one else was involved in the incident.

Westbrook Fire Inspector Lt. Chuck Jarrett was at the scene and said the man fell off a concrete retaining wall by the river’s edge and landed on a rocky ledge just above the water.

A private security guard working for Sappi saw the incident and called rescue units, Jarrett said. Because the man was so far down, Jarrett said rescue crews had to call for a ladder truck from the Gorham Fire Department to assist in the rescue. It took crews just under a half-hour to get the man off the rocks and back over the wall, said Jarrett.

Police said the man suffered a serious back injury in the fall. Rescue crews took him to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment.
