U.S. Attorney Paula D. Silsby announced on Monday that a federal judge on Friday in Portland sentenced Arthur Adams, 38, of Gorham, to 16 years in prison for possession of a firearm by a felon.

Sometime between Feb. 19, 2004, and March 5, 2004, Adams sold a stolen Browning Arms Company .22 caliber rifle, bearing serial number 03550PW146, in exchange for $50.

Silsby said that the Gorham and Scarborough police departments and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation leading to the conviction.

Adams was previously convicted of several violent felonies between 1986 and 1994, specifically, burglary and breaking and entering in a dwelling house in the day time in Massachusetts and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault in Maine.

Based on those convictions, the court determined Adams to be an armed career criminal, which exposed him to a statutory penalty of fifteen years to life in prison.

This case is part of Maine’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which is designed to reduce gun violence in the State of Maine.
