The Gorham Town Council was to consider last night (Aug. 2) whether to place a referendum measure on the November ballot to reconstruct Brackett Road and a part of Libby Avenue.

If approved at the meeting, which took place after the American Journal’s deadline, Gorham voters would be asked to approve spending $1.34 million for the town’s share of the project. The major portion of the $4 million project would come from federal and state funding.

The project would reconstruct the portion of Libby Avenue from Main Street to New Portland Road. All of Brackett Road from New Portland Road to Saco Street also would be reconstructed under the proposal.

Gorham Town Manager David Cole called the construction “significant.” He said it would include widening, improving visibility for drivers and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists with a paved shoulder. “It would be a safer road,” he said.

Libby Avenue and Brackett Road are heavily traveled. Cole said conditions of the two roads were “pretty poor” now. If the two roads were upgraded, he said, they would look similar to Libby Avenue between Main Street and Gray Road.

Unless Gorham voters approve paying for the local share, the project would not go forward, Cole said.
