Warren Kids & Teens TheaterWorks fall registration

Warren Kids and Teens TheaterWorks is accepting registrations for its fall session. The organization offers drama classes for children from ages 6 to 18.

A non-profit organization whose mission is to provide quality theater education programs for all children regardless of their ability to pay. Warren Kids subsidizes student tuition through its fundraising efforts and with the help of the Warren Memorial Foundation and other community organizations.

Started as a program of the Warren Memorial Library 13 years ago, Warren Kids is now an independent organization separate from the library, but still housed in the newly renovated Warren Library auditorium. This fall’s programs, taught by seasoned actor and experienced teacher David LaGraffe, begin on Sept. 20 and run until Nov. 19. Classes include “Creative Dramatics” for ages 6 to 8 from 4 to 5 p.m., on Tuesdays; “On Stage” for ages 9 to 12 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays; and “Actor’s Workshop” for ages 13 to 18 from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Saturdays.

“Creative Dramatics” encourages younger students to explore their imaginary world while developing the ability to share their experiences with an audience. “On Stage” is designed to teach pre-teen students how to translate the elements of story into a palette of physical sensations and emotions, which are then communicated to an audience. “Actor’s Workshop” uses improvisation, theater games and script work to guide teenage students in exploring the connection between emotion, intention and character and in learning how to develop the trust at the heart of strong performance.

Warren Kids tuition is based on a voluntary sliding scale of $25 to $50 per student with scholarships available based on need. For more information, contact warrenkidsandteens@yahoo.com or 650-3789.

Local authors publish guide to college admission

College advisors Anne M. St. Pierre and Danielle Printz published “The Simple Guide to College Admission & Financial Aid” with one goal in mind: to give high school students and their parents an easy-to-use resource to steer them through the complicated college admission and financial aid process.

St. Pierre, a graduate of Westbrook High School and the University of Southern Maine, is a nationally certified counselor who has worked with college-bound high school students since 1993. St.Pierre, who now lives in Portland, is the director of Project Services for the Maine Educational Talent Search Program at the University of Maine.

Printz is also a certified school counselor. She is an educational counselor for the Maine Educational Talent Search Program at the University of Maine. Printz, a graduate of Old Town High School and Springfield College, lives in Bridgton.

According to a special study released earlier this year by the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance, millions of teenagers and adults who aspire to college are overwhelmed by the complexity of the student financial aid process.

“Many students are tempted to quit before they even get started,” said St. Pierre.

“This book provides the necessary information to help students understand the complexities of the college process, but even more important, to take charge of their own success in reaching their

higher educational goals,” remarked Dr. Zark VanZandt, dean of University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn college.

St. Pierre and Printz know first hand how intimidating the process can be. Both were the first in their family to go to college.

“That experience is what inspired me to become a college advisor,” continued St. Pierre.

What sets this book apart is that it provides much more information than other resource guides – especially when it comes to financial aid information. “The Simple Guide to College Admission & Financial Aid” contains a lot of information most families are unaware of, such as how to save money on costly college application fees, successfully complete financial aid forms, maximize financial aid awards, and find the right scholarships.

“Resources from college selection to what to expect as a college student make this guide a must in everyone’s backpack,” said Marcia Weston, director of College Goal Sunday Operations at the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators in Washington, D.C.
