Seeking two available seats on the Town Council, five people, including two incumbents, have taken out nomination papers and two have papers out for seats on the School Committee.

Councilors Michael Phinney and Jane Willett hope to be reelected and have returned their papers to Town Clerk Christina Silberman. One current School Committee member, Steve Caldwell, seeking reelection, has filed his papers with three seats available.

Silberman declined to name those who had taken out nomination papers until those candidates returned the papers.

Harold “Butch” Freeman, a veteran of the war in Iraq, is one three others who have council papers out. Freeman said Monday he planned to run for one of the seats. However, as of Monday, Freeman and the other two had not filed their nomination papers.

School Committee members Bill Neily, who has served nine years, and Steve Morin haven’t taken out papers.

Although Neily hasn’t taken out papers, he didn’t rule out a future run for office. “I’ve had a terrific time. But it’s time to take a little break,” Neily said.

Morin, who served one three-year term on the School Committee, said he has not taken out papers because of his involvement with the recent drive to overturn the Town Council’s decision to consolidate dispatching. In addition to Caldwell, one other person has papers out for the School Committee.

Any registered voter of Gorham can take out nomination papers for either board. Nominations require at least 25 signatures of registered voters in the town. Completed nomination papers are due in Silberman’s office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 23.
