Want to have some fun, meet new people, get some exercise, and at the same time contribute to two great charities? Well, what’s that expression “Come on down”?

The Windham Lions Club is holding its second annual Halloween 5K run / 2.5-mile walk on Sunday, October 30, in memory of Bob and Jaynee Whitaker.

All proceeds will benefit the Make A Wish Foundation of Maine and the Windham Community Charities.

The events begin at Windham High School on Route 202, one mile from the 302 rotary.

The starting gun will go off for the 5K run at 12 noon and will be repeated at 12:05 for the 2.5-mile walk.

The cost for the 5K race is $12 with pre-registration or $15 on race day.

For the 2.5-mile walk, the cost is $10 with pre-registration, and $12 on the event day.

All pre-registrations must be completed by Oct. 23.

The first 300 registrations will receive t-shirts.

For pre-registration contact Rick Garcia at The Fitness Barn, 456 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, 892-3966 or e-mail rick@thefitnessbarn.com.

All participants will receive a MAW “Share the Power of a Wish” awareness bracelet.

The race course begins and ends on the Windham High School track and is not too difficult, with a fairly tough hill in the first mile, but after that, it is reasonably flat.

Awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers, and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd finishers in the 14 gender groups.

Aside from the fun and exercise, your participation will be supporting two wonderful charities.

A portion of the proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine who grants the wishes of Maine children who have life-threatening medical conditions, to provide some hope, strength and joy, to their lives.

The Windham Lions Community Services will benefit also, and for those not familiar with the organization, one of its by-laws states that all proceeds raised from the public has to be returned to the public.

In other words, every penny raised, less the operating costs of a project, has to be given back to the community. And the proceeds from this event will be no different, with the exception that starting this year, they will be distributed in memory of Bob and Jaynee Whitaker.
