Christmas tree lighting

Gorham will light the town’s community Christmas tree at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27, on the lawn in the gazebo area at the Municipal Center on Main Street.

Santa will arrive at 5 p.m. aboard a fire truck. Activities, sponsored by the Gorham Recreation Department, will include caroling and music along with hot chocolate and snacks.

Seniors meal returns next week

Because of Thanksgiving this week, the next weekly meal for senior citizens will be at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 299 Main St.

The seniors were served a Thanksgiving meal last week.

Local Heaven’s Saints chapter

The Heaven’s Saints Motorcycle Ministry, a brotherhood of Christian bikers, is forming a local chapter.

The Saints work together to reach out in the community, providing help and prayer for those in need. The national group has ministries for prisoners and prison prevention for youths. They also help provide food, clothing, blankets, toys and other necessities for needy people.

Gorham campus jazz

The University of Southern Maine Lab Jazz Ensemble, directed by Doug Owens, and the USM Jazz Ensemble, directed by Chris Oberholtzer, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham campus.

The Jazz Ensemble will perform selected movements from the Billy Strayhorn/Duke Ellington arrangement of the Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” in addition to more recent compositions such as USM graduate student Willie Johnson’s arrangement of “Royal Garden Blues.”

The USM Lab Jazz Ensemble program will feature a variety of jazz and Latin styles, as well as creative improvisation by student soloists. Well known works include Wayne Shorter’s “Yes or No,” “Places” by Neil Slater, and “All of Me” made famous by the Count Basie Orchestra. In addition, Lab Jazz will present the Maine premiere of “Larimer” by California composer Mark Denis.

Tickets are $6 for the general public; $3 for seniors and students. For information, call 780-5555.
