Westbrook’s own Haven’s Candies will be featured in a segment of NBC’s popular Today Show Friday morning.

Andy Charles, Haven’s president, said the segment was filmed last week as part of a feature on free or inexpensive things families can do over the holidays.

“We’re pretty cranked up about it,” said Charles.

The segment was hosted by Jeff Yeager, a correspondent who bills himself as “the Ultimate Cheapskate.” Charles said Yeager does segments for the show spotlighting activities that families can do free of charge or close to it.

Charles gave Yeager and his Today Show crew a tour of the factory and then put him to work making candy canes. The crew was joined by a number of children who were at the factory that day. The Today Show is aired locally on Channel 6.

While he doesn’t know exactly when the segment will appear on the show, Charles said he is looking forward to seeing it. “It’s great to be recognized and get some national exposure for our little candy factory here in Maine,” he said.

After viewing the segment, residents are invited to come down to Haven’s Candies Westbrook factory store on County Road for the company’s annual “make your own candy cane event.” The event will be this Friday, Dec. 2, and Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The annual event gives people the chance to watch and learn how candy canes are handcrafted the old-fashioned way and to make their own candy cane creations into either traditional or very unique shapes. Throughout the day, Haven’s candy makers will be on hand to provide each visitor with some pointers and to help them shape their own section of candy cane rope.

“It’s always fascinating to see how many different shapes and designs kids will mold their canes into. And, there’s always a story behind the shape they choose,” said Charles. “We’re proud to help kick off the Holiday Season with this wonderful, free event for the whole family.”
