Peace on Earth.

Could we ask for anything more? I am a Vietnam veteran and I fully understand the consequences of war as I have been there and done that. I was taught how to hate and kill those that I hated. I find it quite unconscionable that we send troops into war in order to obtain peace.

Drivers that aren’t idiots.

Let’s institute the death penalty for idiotic drivers who take drugs and drink alcohol then think that a high speed chase by police is fun. Maybe what we need is a set of handcuffs attached to the steering wheel in order to prevent drivers from talking on cell phones, drinking coffee or slapping the unrestrained children in the back seat. Second thought, forget the thing about coffee. I have to have three or four cups while driving to get my eyes open. And why, pray tell, is the most prolific tailgater a young mother driving a van with young children seemingly unrestrained by seat belts? Shouldn’t we make driver’s training mandatory for everyone?

Protestors should have a purpose in life.

Really, does it make any sense to protest with violence at a World Trade Organization meeting in the name of global peace? I don’t get that at all. It kind of goes with those that protest against dams, nuclear power plants, coal-fired plants and any other kind of power generation and then complain about the brown-outs caused by the lack of electric power. However, maybe we can harness the hot air and methane generated in Augusta, do away with Bangor Hydro and Central Maine Power, sell the excess to other states and still have a deficit with our state budget in Maine.

Improve education.

Not with money, but with substance. Teachers complain in Maine about their salaries. Folks, take a look at the teachers’ salaries and the average income in Maine. Forget about the salaries elsewhere. Those teachers’ salaries need to be where salaries are in Maine. If they don’t like it, take a hike.

No more spin doctors in Maine.

LD1 does not bring property taxes into line because it only provides minor tax relief. Do not confuse tax relief with tax reform because LD1 does not reform taxes, it only uses our own tax dollars for our so-called tax relief, and thus it is a sham touted by our governor and his cronies. Medicaid, also known as Maine Care, is a budget-busting fiasco that must be brought under control. And so should the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, which still seems to be missing millions of our tax dollars.

Finally, no heavy tax burden.

Taxing our way to economic well-being will not work. Let’s make money the old-fashioned way, earn it. I still laugh at a caller on a local talk show that stated everything sold in Maine should be taxed in order that every Mainer can receive a check from our state government. New Hampshire has a high level of income and a low tax burden and is prospering. Instead of spending money on an out-of-state think tank, why not send our governor over there for a week. No, let’s give him a one-way ticket!

And to all, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Enjoy your Christmas tree, Christmas lights and your Christmas presents.
