Bonny Eagle may have secured a playoff spot Friday when the Scots topped visiting Massabesic, 52-43, behind 18 points from Laura Bell.

The 5-foot-11 junior center put up 12 points for the Scots in the second half, allowing her team to run away with a game that was close early on.

The Mustangs came storming out of the starting gate, leading 8-2 halfway through the first period. Massabesic senior Olivia Boisse had her team fired up for the first quarter, scoring five of the teams first 10 points.

“For a (player) not too tall, (Boisse) contributes very well on the court,” said Mustangs coach Andrew Soldati.

Boisse, at 5-foot-8, might look like a mismatch for taller girls in the league, but her nine points in this game proved otherwise.

Freshman sister and counterpart Georgia Boisse proved to be a key player for the Mustangs in the game. She added 13 points and provided intense defense on the opposing guards early on.

While her teammates were applying pressure to the powerful Bonny Eagle forwards, Georgia was pursuing the ball on the outside nearly the entire game.

“We had to have patience and work the ball around early on,” said Bell, “but my teammates kept me calm.”

The two sisters provided defense and offense for their team throughout the night.

“They are simply great kids,” commented Soldati.

The Mustangs seemed dominant, but the turning point in the game came with one minute to play in the first half.

Bell began to take control of the game, and with a lay-up the Scots took their first and final lead in the game, 20-18 going into the locker room.

The tough inside defense of the first half by Massabesic was soon counteracted by a need to press the Scots in the second half. Bonny Eagle was able to move the ball up the court well and break the Mustangs’ porous press, weakening their inner defense as well.

Meghan Ledoux made big plays all night, exemplified by her behind-the-back pass to Kelly Johnson early in the third that saved an over-and-back half court call.

“When (Ledoux is) in control, she’s a wonderful ball player,” coach Marc Sawyer said.

Ledoux only put up seven points in this game, but her contribution to ball control and movement proved invaluable.

Though her teammates played well, Bell remained the star of the game. Her single-effort 6-0 scoring against the Mustangs early in the fourth quarter solidified the victory for the strong-finishing Scots.

Bell has scored well in her last two games, finishing her third night in a row scoring over 16 points.

“The guards are doing a better job of getting her the ball,” said Sawyer, “and she’s doing a better job of handling the pressure.”

The chemistry seems to be working as the Scots evened their record at 8-8 after beating Marshwood, 47-41, Tuesday. for their third win in a row. Massabesic is now 5-9.
