For the past nine years, Westbrook first graders have been on the receiving end of the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program. RIF is a nationwide group that has been promoting literacy in young people and their families for forty years.

A locally funded grant from Sappi Fine Paper Company provides four brand new quality books at no cost for each student. Every first grader in Westbrook benefits from this grant.

Along with the free books that students can pick out themselves, RIF also provides fun activities that promote reading and ways to engage family and community members.

Westbrook schools will be helping celebrate RIF’s 40th anniversary by participating in a nation wide give-away May 16th, 2006.
