Streaking Monks

St. Joseph’s baseball team is 22-1-1 in their last 24 games and ranked fifth in the latest New England College Baseball Coaches Poll. Monks sophomore Charlie Furbush was named the North Atlantic Conference Co-Player of the Week In four appearances this week, the South Portland native picked up two wins over Elms as well as a pair of saves. In 7.2 innings of work, the sophomore struck out 13 batters, allowed no hits, no runs and no walks. At the plate, Furbush hit two triples, scored five runs and added an RBI and three walks on the week. Freshman outfielder Wade Oliver, of Owls Head, Maine earned Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this season. Oliver went 6-for-10 with three runs and three RBI.

Flying like an Eagle

Derek Murchie was part of a USM 4 x 100 relay team that finished second at the 2006 State of Maine Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held Saturday at Colby College in Waterville. The junior speedster joined Jimmy Sawyer, Andrew Whitcomb and Trevor Sullivan-Smith to finish the race in 44.13. Murchie was part of a different foursome that set a Huskies’ school record of 3:28.05 in the 4 x 400 at the Bates College Invitational on April 15.

Legion ball tryouts

There will be a tryout Sunday for the Libby-Mitchell American Legion Post 76 baseball team at 430 p.m. at Wiley Field, off Tenney Lane, near Pleasant Hill Road in Scarborough. Players should bring glove, hat and spikes, and be prepared to play. Players must also bring an original copy of their birth certificates and be prepared to fill out a player registration form. Libby-Mitchell is authorized this year to give tryouts to boys 15 thru 19 from Scarborough, Windham and Buxton. Also, boys who played on the team last year are authorized to tryout, regardless of where they live, and players cut from any other Legion team are eligible to tryout for Libby-Mitchell.
