The Lake Region girls varsity tennis team, riding a two-meet losing streak coming in to the beginning of the week, headed to Point Sebago with the daunting task of having to play three meets in three days, starting Monday with the 4-1 Greely Rangers.

Coach Kim Peterson, in her fifth year as head coach of the Lakers, was looking for her squad to bounce back after starting the season 2-0 by defeating Wells (5-0) and Freeport (3-2).

Lake Region, though, had a difficult time with the visitors, losing 5-0. The Ranger’s Sophie Dillman led the charge, shutting out Lake Region’s Ashlea Allen 6-0, 6-0.

Lauren Kinney of Greely followed with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cristina Corson and Lake Region’s Tanya Ross also tasted defeat at the hands of Emily Makynen 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles action, things didn’t get much better. The Lakers’ Rachel Hill and Ashley Emery were a handful for the team of Jessie Thorup and Jessie Erdman, but in the end the Ranger’s came out on top 6-0, 6-4.

In the other doubles match, Lake Region’s Kristyn Peterson and Courtney Maclean were back together for the first time this season, showed their rust as they tried to handle the strong serves of Tessa Churchill and Amanda Gray, dropping both sets 6-2, 6-0.

Day two for the Lakers turned out to be much better when a young and inexperienced Old Orchard Beach Lady Gulls team came to town looking for the programs first win.

Under cloudy, damp skies, Lake Region’s Cristina Corson led the charge with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over the Lady Gulls Jolee Livingston.

On court two, Old Orchard Beach’s Cortney Rague gave Ashlea Allen some spirited competition before losing 6-2, 6-3.

On court three, in one of the best matches of the day, the Lakers Kristyn Peterson had her hands full with Old Orchard Beach’s Amanda Nadeau. After a 6-1 victory in the first set, the rains began to fall and Peterson jumped out to a sizable 4-1 lead in the second set. Nadeau battled back for the Lady Gulls, tying it at five, before Peterson hammered home the last two points with authority, making it a 7-5 final.

Competition reigned supreme on the doubles side as well.

On court one, the team of Rachel Hill and Courtney Maclean for Lake Region faced off against Old Orchard Beach’s Sam King and Amber Nordmann and it appeared that both teams were evenly matched from the start.

Lake Region won the first set 6-3, but during the second, the Lady Gulls pushed Hill and Maclean to the limit in a hard fought 7-5 win for the Lakers.

In the other doubles match on Tuesday, Lake Region’s team of Megan Curtis and Bethany White battled the Lady Gull team of Alecia Larou and Lili Valencia. After starting a little bit slow and allowing Old Orchard Beach to jump out to a quick lead, the Lakers pair of Curtis and White buckled down and managed to handle Larou and Valencia 6-4, 6-1 completing the 5-0 sweep for the Lakers.
