Windham’s softball team outhit Biddeford Saturday, but walks and mistakes in the field resulted in a comeback victory for the Tigers, 6-5. The loss began a three-game skid for the Lady Eagles, who are now fighting for a place at the postseason table.

“I think we need to talk more out there,” said Windham shortstop Amanda Evans. “I think we’re doing well, and I think we can go all the way if we keep our heads in the game.”

Evans and her teammates had an impressive stretch in the middle of the season, winning five of six, with the only blemish a 1-0 loss against top-ranked South Portland. But after dropping close games to Biddeford, Gorham (Monday, 4-2) and Portland (Tuesday, 2-1), the Eagles record had evened at 6-6 going into the final stretch of the schedule.

Though the hosts were ahead twice Saturday, the Tigers came back each time, including scoring a pair in the sixth to take the lead.

“We’ve kind of been on a roll lately, so we knew not to get down,” said Biddeford catcher Emily Rousseau. “We knew it’d be a close game coming in, and Coach said to stay up.”

The Tigers brought a runner to third base in the first, but Windham pitcher Ally Noble bore down and rang up two strikeouts to work out of the jam. Her team responded with a run in the bottom of the frame when Caitlin O’Brien doubled and scored on Ashley Corkum’s single.

The visitors hit back with three runs in the second on three hits and a walk. Windham tied the score at three right away, with a pair of Biddeford errors sandwiching a double off the base of the fence by center fielder Darcey Webster.

Kendra Martel gave the Tigers the lead when she walked, took second on a wild pitch and then scored from second in the fourth inning on Rousseau’s second RBI single of the game. Once again the Eagles returned fire, pushing across a pair on RBI singles by Webster and O’Brien.

Biddeford pitcher Michelle Gagnon settled down after that and shut out her opponents the rest of the way, allowing her team’s bats to do their job.

In the sixth another walk proved costly for the Eagles, as Ashley Potvin took the free pass and tied the contest when Justine McCurry reached on an error. Then Aimee Mortenson knocked in the game-winning run with a liner to left that a diving Corkum couldn’t come up with.

“We didn’t quit, and they didn’t quit, which is the mark of two good teams,” said Tigers coach Leon Paquin, whose team is now 9-2. “We made a mistake and they capitalized, and they made one and we did, too.”

Gagnon, who pitched the first half of a 19-0 win over Massabesic earlier Saturday, struck out eight while walking just one. Noble struck out five, but let up five walks.

Windham was scheduled to close out the regular season with a flurry of games, first on the road at Marshwood and Massabesic (Wednesday), at Scarborough (Thursday) and home against Noble (Friday).
