A very spirited Bonny Eagle Scots (13-2) softball team rolls past the Cheverus Stags (4-11) to a 10-0 win in Portland. Cheering all the way, the Scots took victory behind terrific pitching and defense.

Sophomore Maddie Kluna (5 IP, 0 R, 3K) had pitched all 13 innings in a 1-0 marathon against South Portland earlier this week and was on the mound for five more innings in this contest. When asked how she dealt with the fatigue of pitching so many innings, Kluna said “I have slept a lot this week.”

“Two shutouts in two days is incredible” said Coach Corliss, “This is the best defensive team I have coached in 24 years.”

The Cheverus ace, Allie Green (2.1 IP, 5 R, 2K), had pitched 19 innings in the two days before the game and was pulled during the third inning for Marissa Bouchard (4.2 IP, 5 R, 0K). According to Coach Rick Supinski, the Stags have few pitchers this year and lost six of nine starters from last year due to transfer and graduation, which is why Green was starting in this game. “Green was tired,” said the coach.

The Scots jumped out of the gate with three runs in the first inning after a double by senior Courtney Wallace (1R, 3RBI) drove in the first run. After Bonny Eagle scored twice more on a wild pitch, Green got a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat. Kluna came out and got right to work, striking out one and inducing two groundouts for a perfect first inning. In the second inning Cheverus managed one hit but could not cross the plate. The Scots came up with one more run on another hit by Wallace to take the commanding 4-0 lead after two innings.

In the third inning, Bouchard replaced Cheverus starting pitcher Green after giving up a double to Senior Jess Nassetta (1R, 1RBI) and then getting a groundout to first. The Scots got one run that inning and took a 5-0 lead.

The Scots put the game away in the fourth inning, exploding for four runs on RBIs by Wallace, Nassetta and 2 by senior Natasha Taylor (2RBI). Cheverus managed one hit in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but no runner made it past second base.

“It was good to get hits again,” Wallace said, “the past couple of games I haven’t been hitting well.”

In the fifth inning the Stags turned an impressive 4-3 double play when Baldwin fielded a sharp grounder, tagged the runner and threw a strike to first base.

In the sixth inning, Senior Jess Bettney (2R) scored after she was hit by a pitch and stole two bases. After 6 innings the Scots had a 10-0 lead. Coach Jan Corliss pulled Kluna after the fifth inning with a 9-0 lead to give relief pitcher Cassie Coste (2 IP, 0 R, 0K) playing time.

After a walk and a single in the seventh, the Scots failed to score and Cheverus went down one-two-three to end the game 10-0.
