Scarborough 2

Thornton Academy 1

Despite a yeoman’s effort in goal from Kira Clark, the Thornton Academy JV girls’ soccer team lost its first game of the year, 2-1, to Scarborough Wednesday.

Clark made 20 saves for the Trojans.

“She had 20 tough saves,” said Scarborough coach Doug Bennett. “We had shots point-blank, right on her but she stood right there and took the heat.”

The Red Storm began peppering Clark with shots from the get-go. She turned away six in the first 10 minutes a foul by Thornton gave Scarborough a free kick 30 yards from the goal. Lindsay Hagerman’s free kick came from Clark’s left and hit the net in the right corner.

“(Hagerman’s) the one who can hit that shot,” Bennett said.

It’s not as though Clark was all by herself facing shots. The Trojans defense turned away a number of Red Storm opportunities.

“I was impressed with our defensive play. They stopped a lot of shots,” said Thornton coach Lenny Hurrell.

That defense kept it a close game throughout the rest of the first half, holding Scarborough to just the one goal despite 13 shots.

Halfway through the second half, the Red Storm doubled their lead when Chelsea Kothman managed to slip one past Clark from in front of the net.

“(Clark) was tough; she made us work for all of our goals,” Bennett said. “She kept us honest.”

Thornton inched closer when Cheryl Giroux scored on an indirect kick from right in front of the net with just under 14 minutes to play.

But in the end the Trojans would come up just short.

“I thought at times we had some good play and we have some skilled players,” Hurrell said. “But I think they knew their roles better than we did and it hurt us.”

Lily Parenteau had two saves for Scarborough in the first half and Deanna Heath had three in the second half to preserve the victory.

“It’s good for us to get games like this where we have to really gut the game out,” said Bennett. “The goalie was tremendous, the best we’ve faced all year.”
