Scarborough 3

Biddeford 2

Meaghan Myers scored the game-winning goal with 4:25 left in overtime to give Scarborough a 3-2 win over Biddeford Monday.

“She was just where she needed to be and she executed,” said Red Storm coach Kerry Mariello.

The first half belonged to Biddeford as they recorded eight shots and two goals. While Scarborough scored once, they managed just two shots.

Halfway through the first half, the Red Storm opened the scoring when Myers knocked one past Tigers goalie Kendra Martel. Myers has been playing well lately.

“The last two games she’s had two very clutch goals,” said Mariello. “She had a beautiful one the other night against Westbrook.”

The Tigers tied things up five minutes later when Nicole Kimborowicz flipped the ball into the cage over the stick of Erika Schneller.

Biddeford would add another goal late in the first half to take a 2-1 lead. Bryanna Rizas flipped the ball high into the cage for the go-ahead score. Just moments before, the Red Storm replaced Schneller in goal with Andrea Shryock.

At halftime the Tigers held onto a 2-1 lead. During the break Mariello spoke to her team.

“She was just motivating us and saying we’ve never beaten Biddeford before so that really motivated us,” said Myers.

It worked. Scarborough looked like a different team in the second half, getting to the ball faster and finishing their plays.

“We are a second-half team,” says Mariello. “We’ve conditioned them at the start of the season to prepare for those types of games.”

All that preparation paid off as the Red Storm scored the only goal of the second half and also registered six shots.

The one goal came in the first 10 minutes of the half. There was a scrum in front of the Biddeford goal when Nancy Leasure found the ball on her stick and quickly shoved it into the goal for the equalizer with a little over 20 minutes left to play.

Both defenses tightened up over the final minutes of the second half. Neither team was able to score again.

“My defense worked hard,” said Biddeford coach Meagan Boudreau. “I don’t think they played great, but they did play well.”

The Biddeford defense fended off three penalty corners with no time left to force overtime.

In the extra frame, the Red Storm came out fast. They recorded two shots right away. The third shot won the game.

“I just got really excited as I saw as I saw the ball go over the defender’s stick,” said Myers. “Then I just smacked it in hoping for the best.”

She got the result she wanted. Her shot gave Scarborough the win, 3-2.

“We didn’t play our game today. Scarborough deserves that one,” Boudreau said.

With the win Scarborough improves to 5-2. They play Cheverus (2-3) Thursday. The loss drops Biddeford to 3-2-1.
