The Scarborough High School Academic Decathlon team, continuing its tradition of excellence, brought home individual and team gold, silver and bronze medals in the annual competition, held last Saturday at Deering High School in Portland.

One of 18 competing schools from around the state, including perennial high-scoring teams from Monmouth Academy and Oak Hill High School, Scarborough earned 7 of the 9 top individual combined scores and scored a total of 40,597 points. Monmouth Academy finished as the top small-school competitor with 36,350 points. Scarborough’s Jon Russell was the top scoring honors student, with 7,900 points.

The event tests students in 10 areas over the course of the day: speech, interview, essay, language/ literature, art, music, economics, math and social sciences. The final event, the Super Quiz, is the one event open to the public, as teams, their coaches, and families cheer each competitor through 10 multi-choice questions. The topic of this year’s Super Quiz was climatology, moderated by local meteorologist Joe Cupo. The main theme for this Decathlon was “China: Past and Present.” Scarborough finished first in the Super Quiz.
