South Portland’s Julie DiMatteo outdueled Gorham’s Tammie Arsenault in a 1-0 Red Riots victory on Monday afternoon. The Red Riots scored the only run of the game on an error in the top of the eighth inning.

Arsenault gave up five hits and struck out six batters to keep her team in the game till the very end.

DiMatteo allowed just three hits while striking out six. And like Arsenault, DiMatteo did not issue any walks.

Earlier in the week the Riots offense could not be stopped in a 7-1 win over Thornton Academy. Jamie Harmon had three extra base hits to pace the Riots offense.

South Portland scored two in the second inning to take the early lead and that was all they would need to subdue the Trojans thanks to a fine pitching performance from Lauren Tuttle. Tuttle made her first varsity start for the Riots and she struck out six batters while allowing five hits.

The Red Riots are 2-2 entering this week’s play and they were scheduled to host Massabesic on Tuesday.
