The Windham boys and girls tennis teams marched into the Western Maine Class A quarterfinal round of play. The boys had a bye thanks to their 11-1 record and No. 3 regional ranking, while the girls used a 5-0 prelim victory over Thornton Academy on Tuesday to move on.

The defending West A champion boys team will not be an easy match for any of their opponents. The Eagles were scheduled to take on No. 6 Gorham (8-4) in a re-match of last year’s regional final. Windham already owns a 3-2 victory over the Rams from earlier this season. The two foes were scheduled to play Thursday, May 31, in Windham (results were not available at press time).

The winner of that match will play in a regional semifinal on Saturday against either No. 7 Cheverus (8-5) or No. 2 Scarborough (11-1). The Eagles defeated Cheverus by a 4-1 score on May 14, but they suffered their only loss of the season in a 3-2 defeat to Scarborough on May 22.

The Windham girls improved to 10-3 on the season with Tuesday victory over the Trojans. The sixth-seeded Eagles faced off with No. 3 Cheverus (10-2) in a quarterfinal match that was scheduled for Thursday, May 31 (results were not available at press time). The Stags beat Windham by a 3-2 margin back on May 14.

The winner of Thursday’s match gets to play the either No. 7 Sanford (9-4) or No. 2 Kennebunk (11-1) in a regional quarterfinal on Saturday. The Eagles did not play Kennebunk during the regular season, but they did defeat Sanford.
