Gorham’s town council Tuesday turned down a request to re-zone a large tract on lower Main Street from office commercial to roadside commercial.

Don Dolloff, who had a customer for a 10-acre parcel, said Monday he didn’t anticipate that the zoning would be changed because of abutter opposition. “We’ll be looking for another buyer,” Dolloff said.

Dolloff had asked to rezone 24 acres.

Mike Phinney, chairman of the town council’s ordinance committee, said in Tuesday’s council meeting that the committee voted not to support Dolloff’s request. Phinney said Dolloff originally thought abutters supported the change. But, Phinney said an abutter attended an ordinance committee meeting and opposed the specific project.

Phinney said Wednesday a wide variety of businesses would be allowed under roadside commercial. “It’s our most wide open zone,” Phinney said.
