Reading is Fundamental

I remember hearing that a lot growing up. Think it might have been part of an ad campaign in the 1960s or ’70s? Well, it is certainly true. As I spend a part of every week (especially Monday mornings of late) at the Spaulding Memorial Library, and I email almost daily with a dear friend who’s employed at not just one, but three libraries, I can say books and reading have a big impact on my life.

This morning I was reminded that this is Banned Books Week – the week when we should all take the time to read a banned book. Fortunately, our library does indeed have most of the current list of banned books. (I saw the list hung up behind the circulation desk). I was also given a web site that I just have to share with you: www.ala.org. Go to the Banned Books Week section and you will find a plethora of information at your disposal.

There will be no preschool story time this Friday, Oct. 5, due to the teacher’s workshop at the elementary school that day.

This month starts the Book It reading challenge at Sebago Elementary School. Children can be read to, siblings can read to each other, and older students may use reading homework to meet the reading requirements.

If they reach their preset weekly reading goals, they earn a coupon good for a personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut.

Harvest Dinner

The North Sebago United Methodist Church will be holding a Harvest Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 6. Corned beef will be on the menu. The dinner will run from 5-6:30pm.

Sebago Kids Among Trek Volunteers

Devin Langadas, a sixth-grader at Sebago Elementary School, rode the 25-mile portion of the trek. She raised the third highest amount of donations ($600 I believe) and won a canoe.

Ciara and Chris Harriman and Lucien and Giselle Wallace ran the basin station serving drinks and snacks to those finishing the 25- and 75-mile portions, and folks halfway through the 50-mile portion of the trek.

Evelyn Abrams 4-H group ran a station as well. They provided sandwiches for the 100-mile century riders. This was the first year the Loon Echo Land Trust had a hiking portion.

The weather, I’m told, was perfect for the event.

Sheehans wow Common Ground Fair

Kevin and Lindy Sheehan spent three days entertaining at the Common Ground Fair in Unity. Kevin has a wonderful Dutch street organ he had built in Holland, completed in 2002. Kevin wears lederhosen and Lindy colorful clothing. Locally, we enjoy them both during Grand Pals day at the elementary school and during Sebago Days. Kevin allows those interested to hand crank the wheel, which controls the organ. The wheel is much larger and harder to turn than a car steering wheel and you know you’ve had a work-out when you are done.

Lindy has an assortment of puppets she animates and encourages children to join in. Everyone gravitates to the Sheehans whenever they are present.
