Scarborough 2

Falmouth 0

The Scarborough girls’ ice hockey team finished with a perfect 20-0 record after a shutout win over second-seeded Falmouth, 2-0, in the MGIHA Tier II Championship game last week. Jackie Morin and Jordan Finley accounted for the two Red Storm goals and Scarborough goalie Felicia Mazzone recorded the shutout.

After a scoreless first period, things got interesting in the second when the Storm found themselves facing two separate two-skater disadvantages. Somehow they were able to kill off both of those power plays.

Not only did Scarborough not surrender a power play goal, but Morin drew first blood with a short-handed tally that turned out to be the game-winner.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Red Storm until the final minutes of the third period. Finley and Chelsea Barrett broke out of their own end for a two-on-one chance. Barrett shot, but Falmouth’s goalie stopped the puck. Finley was there, though, and stuffed home the rebound to give Scarborough the winning margin.

The Red Storm steamrolled through their Tier II schedule this year with Mazzone recording 10 shutouts in 20 games. Scarborough only allowed 17 goals the entire season. Their high-powered offense scored an amazing 108 goals in their 20 games.

Earlier in the playoffs, the Red Storm defeated Fryeburg in the quarterfinals by the score of 9-1. In the semifinals, Scarborough made quick work of Gorham. Mazzone recorded another shutout in a 7-0 win.

Thanks to their undefeated championship season, Finley, Morin, Barrett and Rebecca Bragg will represent the Red Storm at the MGIHA Tier II All-Star game.
