Westbrook High School student musicians came home with some awards last weekend as they traveled to Stearns High School in Millinocket to compete in the State Jazz Festival.

The school’s two jazz bands and jazz combo were awarded gold medals for their high scores. In addition, the combo came in second place in its category.

Three Westbrook students also took home individual awards for outstanding musicianship. They were Zach Dugas, alto saxophone; Ron Ho, alto saxophone, and Molly Ridley, a keyboard player who took home two awards for her performances in both jazz band and jazz combo.

Musicians at Westbrook Middle School won’t have to travel as far for their state competition, which is this weekend in their hometown.

Between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday, 35 jazz bands from middle schools around the state will perform at Westbrook High School. The Wescott Junior High jazz band will be playing “Topsy” by Eddie Durham and Edgar Battle in the morning.
