Caribou 5

Westbrook 2

The Caribou softball team scored three runs in the top of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and earn a preseason win over Westbrook Monday in a five-inning scrimmage. The Vikings scored on two passed balls and a sacrifice fly to break the deadlock then held on for the win.

Caribou got on the board first. After going down in order in the first, the Vikings put together a rally in the second. Serena Grier got things going when she drew a walk. She took second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Westbrook pitcher Karleigh Gaudreau issued another walk. With two runners on, Ashley Ayotte singled in the first run. Ayotte later scored on an error that gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

The Blazes got those two runs back in their half of the third. Gaudreau led off the inning with a single, and a walk followed that hit and Westbrook was threatening with two runners and no one out. A groundout to first allowed the two runners to advance to second and third, which was followed by a walk to load the bases.

Gaudreau scored on a wild pitch to pull Westbrook to within a run. Then Courtney McGrane singled to drive in the tying run. The Blazes were still threatening when Paulina Goyette lined out and McGrane was doubled up.

The score remained tied at two until the fifth. Caribou started the inning in fine fashion with a pair of walks. Thanks to a series of wild pitches, both runners eventually scored to make it a 4-2 Vikings advantage. Ashley Doucette made her way to third for Caribou and scored on a fly ball to left field. Eventually the Blazes got out of the inning but not before the damage was done.

Westbrook had one last opportunity in the bottom of the fifth. Cynthia Wescott was the first batter, but she popped out to the shortstop. A one out single gave the Blazes some life. But a diving catch by the Caribou shortstop on a liner from Ashlyn Bourgeois left the Blazes with only one more out. Caribou pitcher Serena Grier got a ground out to second to end the game.

The Blazes were scheduled to get kick off their season Wednesday against Kennebunk.
